Astor himself tells us: “My contact with Gardel was ephemeral. The only pleasure I had was filming with him some scenes from “El día que me quieras” —I was a “canillita” (paper boy) — and accompanying him, on certain occasions, with the bandoneon I was just beginning to play. To understand and love Gardel, one has to have passed through Buenos Aires, have known the Abasto market, and I was just a thirteen-year-old boy living in New York. I didn't even know how to play a tango on the bandoneon. That is the reason Gardel, when listening to me for the first time, told me: "Kid, you play the bandoneon like a Galician!". Nos cuenta el propio Astor: Mi contacto con Gardel fue muy pasajero. El único placer que tuve fue filmar con él algunas escenas de El día que me quieras —hacía de canillita—, y acompañarlo, en ciertas oportunidades, con el bandoneón que yo recién empezaba a estudiar. Para entender y amar a Gardel, uno tiene que haber pasado por Buenos Aires, conocer el mercado de Abasto, y yo sólo era un chico de trece años que vivía en New York. Ni siquiera tocaba bien un tango en el bandoneón. Por eso Gardel, cuando me escucha por primera vez, me dice: "¡Pibe, vos tocás el bandoneón como un gallego!"».
