CRISIS IN MALDONADO HOSPITAL. URUGUAY

 CRISIS IN MALDONADO HOSPITAL. URUGUAY.

Yesterday had dawned with a torrential rain, I thought that at that hour of the dawn there would be few patients in Hospital de Maldonado. But no, there were groups of mourners who waited in Emergency for the call through an almost mute speaker.

I went to mourn the friendly Cardiologist who was doing the echocardiography and I explained that I was short of air when walking half a block and that I was Type II Diabetic. Without taking pity on me she sent me to take turns in emergency because she had to leave quickly for a wedding or birthday in the rain, the latest fashion in the middle class.

I told her that I knew what I had and that in emergency - after waiting several hours- I lowered the blood glucose and they would give me some medicine for the heart that I already suspected in the pharmacy did not exist.

First she sent me to one of the windows that was like the 17th or the 5th, each one of the girls sent you to the next, to tell you that if I did not have a General Medicine pass or the Diebetologist or the Cardiologist could not do nothing.

I looked at the number of poorly paid bureaucrats - even those who were sheltered under the glass, to the right of the Hospital entrance and who gossiped amusingly without attending to any complaint.

I went to the Laboratory and a young patient, arriving a little late for the rain, did not want to be attended. The woman in a fit of rage tore the indications of analysis in front of everyone. That was a scandal but the other mourners did not say anything. And there was the rubbish of the papers until the cleaning assistants-eye, be careful how you refer to these poor poor women-as indirect indicators of the mistreatment suffered by the poor patients.

To pass through the hall of the Laboratory there were about 3 Segurities that asked where one was going, they were satisfied with the word of destiny without checking if one had a molotov cocktail hidden under the clothes and was going to explode inside the Nosocomium.

There are so many women behind the windows, plus others who are behind them, which I think surpass the medical and paramedical staff. There is an excess of insane bureaucratism. They enter to work for cronyism or contest. I dont know.

The psychiatrists seem to have been expelled to the periphery as San Carlos and Vigía. They do not have, some of the mentally ill, nor tickets for transportation. Some of the mild psychiatric illnesses already merit being admitted to the Vilardebó because of how much they suffer on those trips.

There was a gray-haired psychiatrist, without combing his hair and looking lost, old man, who must have been quietly retired and ruminating and remembering all the nightmares that caused him to give so much electroshock to his patients. I thought he was a one escaped from Vilardebó, but I kept giving consultation and repeating medicines to the poor people who suffered the most. The poor Doctor must have already removed him. Patients with "moderate fear of the world" syndrome ran away from the doctor's office when they saw the old man half a block away where they were already cured of fear, that was the best therapy.

Another Internal Medicine Doctor with retirement age to whom one explained a correct anamnesis of one condition He, without looking at the computer, said in a sour voice: What medications do you need? And One was paralyzed by this response.

The nurses seem well taught and treat patients with love in healing and emergency, but the doctors look like bad students practicing medicine and know almost nothing. Only serve the most traumatized and that before big wounds and a lot of blood, they lose consciousness.

The pharmacy ladies are kind to tell you that certain medications of chronic and impressible use are not in existence. So diabetics, epileptics and cancers stay for weeks until the mother laboratory provides them and they disappear immediately from the pharmacy at the request of the people.

That's why they send you to window No. 7 for the girl to ask you if she chooses a cremation or a normal funeral. And the elderly, resigned, go home to wait for God to take them if the medicine does not arrive at the hospital before.

There is a pharmaceutical woman who seems to put on makeup before going to work to eat a piece of fresh pork so that her lips are iridescent as God intended and she is one of the oldest in the Pharmacy, treats patients with the dryness they deserve, those old people who can not with their soul and without a medicine that is missing.

The one with the bloody lips as they dry off and the disguise is removed puts her in a bad mood because she shows her true soul. I'm terrified of her, because I'm afraid she will break the crystal and devour my face like a cannibal so that her lips will recover the deep red color.

But the worst thing is the bureaucracy that they practice in the glass windows where the old people are sent disoriented from one to the other, sometimes making endless queues. To tell them that they missed the window, which is 2 or 5 or 10, and finally the elderly end up banging on the bathroom door to see if someone attend it or if there is someone seminconsciente of constinpation to treat it correctly.

I know that administrative staff is badly paid and that is reflected in their faces of frustrated women. They had to grab another job because in Health they must have a special sensitivity to treat patients, who do not go for fun, but in search of help. Except when the companion of the mourner is dressed as a wealthy woman, then their voices soften and attend well or give a sweet explanation to the family member.

I have already written a story about the Diabetologist, which is good or bad, depending on whether her depression is rising or falling or that her husband is keeping her from time to time. I writing a story about her, of course without her name, entitled "The Harpy with White dress"

We have to help Maldonado Hospital to make up for its shortcomings, especially respect for the patient's dignity. I do not know if the Director knows about these things or knows them and can not do anything, and above all, give a decent pay to its large bureaucracy and its friendly nurses.

THE ESPETO CORRIDO IN URUGUAY

THE ESPETO CORRIDO IN URUGUAY.

    Day of the Magi King
.
On the night of  The Magi  Kings I was invited to a Espeto Corrido here in Punta del Este. I already saw as a bullring, with the black and sweaty beasts entering the ring.

The name must have come from Catalan or from Pamplona, it had a sound that reminded me of my grandparents' old country.   Diners had to enter between horses and bulls of lydia. But no. It was a large resto or restaurant that went to the corner between windows and black porters but I could not see any bull anywhere.
o
The first thing that caught my attention was that they delivered a card to each diner. I asked politely

:-Come here, man, but what is this thing? I am already tired of the booklet in Cuba so that here they also give me one to enter. -And I added- Do not tell me that food is also rationed? Do I get beans that I make years ago that I can not find anywhere?

-Do not. Sir. That notebook is to record what you consume. Ahh And the beans here are called porotos.

   - I do not want porotos. I want to eat a plate of fried beans even if my diabetes takes me to a state of Coma.

    - Good. Take a plate and use the Buffet.

I paraded with the rest of the guests embarrassed for being an almost Guajiro Cuban. But pride apart. "Guajiro but with great honor" I wanted to simply eat a plate of beans. We paraded dish in hand by the table called "Buffet" - back in Cuba we called it "Mesa Sueca" - as if the Swedes had invented the stew that was served in those Nordic but in cuban tables.

Surprise I felt when I saw so many delicacies on the trays, some with French, Russian or South Vietnamese names. Like the ravioli "a la Caruso" with double cream that after a black beer made you sing the Aria of Pucchini.

Then came the beautiful. We had to weigh each plate on an electronic scale. And they put a stamp or coupon on the back with the grams or kilograms and all that. Nothing that ever reminded me of the Cuba of whom you know. But my God. I thought that here in Uruguay food was not rationed. Everything was by kilo and flavors, aspect, if five or four stars and all that.

Finally an old Uruguayan writer friend told me that Espeto Corrido was a Brazilian word to designate this type of service but the Uruguayan was still on the breaded Milanesa- steak- and fried potatoes. That this type of subtract had not yet "caught" on the palate of the country.

I finally found the black beans. Behold, they were called "Feioada"

Feioada of what. They are simply black bean stew. How feioda or feioda.

A few beers later my tongue dropped and the cuban happyness emerged. I told Chiqui that who had given her those beautiful jewels and earrings.

  - Those were given to me by my friend M ..

.-Ahh M .... When she had money because now is more pelá than a yucca in Haitian house.

She discreetly removed the conversation about her jewels and started talking about a dislocation of the right shoulder that had her praying with one hand because the other could not raise it.I said:

   - Sell those expensive jewelry and have an anesthetic block in the shoulder or if not an operation with general anesthesia.

Poor Chiqui. She got silent as offended.

My God, I think I screwed up the claws because I was already a lion with the half beer I had taken.

Then the writer started talking about his books. That the Red Book stops there, that the Yellow Book stops here, until finishing its speech with the Black book.

-Sir. You think that literature is like the rainbow. I just needed to talk about the Ultraviolet book to finish that nobody sees it or reads it. Also, I read them all. The yellow left me schizophrenic with so many visions that you described, the Red left my eyes burning like conjunctivitis and the Black book left me ready for the Mentally Ill ward of the psychiatric hospital of Vilardebó.

   The whole table was silent.

  - But gentlemen. Did I say something wrong?

Everyone looked at each other. The writer still had his mouth open and Chiqui was shaking her head in shame.

-Let's go to your house, dude-that was me.

-It  looks like beer and diabetes have gone to my head.

On the way home I started stumbling and told my sister-in-law.

-Before I drank beer. The drinks went to my head, now they descend to my feet. I can not walk. Ayy My mommy! What a crazy life. Why did you bring me to the world?

Before going to bed I asked myself, thinking that I was still in Cuba:

  - And the black beans? Bodeguero, cheeky! Give me the portion of porotos,  I say black beans, that I bring here the ration book.

And so happened the happy day of the Magi in Punta del Este. Uruguay.

Thank God I behaved rationally and soberly.

Dia Feliz en Hospital de Maldonado. Uruguay.

DIA FELIZ EN HOSPITAL DE MALDONADO. URUGUAY.

-No.

Me quieren Enalaprilizar.

-No.

-Buenas tardes… ejem… perdone.

  - Otra vez vuelve a cargarme.

-No. Ahh. Y los frijoles aquí se llaman porotos.

  - No quiero porotos.

¿He dicho algo improcedente?

No puedo caminar. ¡Ayy.

Uruguay.
.
Gracias a Dios que me porté racional y sobriamente.

Cuba: the three Magi Kings and the special Period.

CUBA: THE THREE KINGS AND THE SPECIAL PERIOD.

The 6th of January was the day of the three wise men. We had 2 children, a girl of 8 years and a boy of 4. They knew the story of the birth of Christ, my daughter for Sunday catechesis and the boy for how I told him.
We were in the middle of the special period. The day was approaching ...

When I was little child I believed in the history of the Kings, inspired by the legend of the Gospels but that the boys believed at the bottom of the letter in a traditional Catholic family and in rest of the people.

In general.I asked for the toys that the Magic king would bring me. It was a great illusion for the children and we waited for the day with joyful hope , all the children of any social class.

I prepared a nest of herbs for the camels-my mother told me that they went under the door-and a glass of water for the Kings after their long journey. I also bought candy that I placed nearby so that the Magi, grateful, would bring me the requested toys.

My older brother stole the candy from the grass under the bed and I cried complaining to my parents about the theft and the sin that he was committing. Later I learned that he already knew the truth but my parents were forbidden to tell me anything about

it.And the day of the Three Magi came. I got up early and went running to the Christmas tree to see the toys they had left for me. What a great joy and excitement to see the toys.

After, all the children went out to the streets showing the toys or the obligatory question was "What did the Magi bring you?It was an unforgettable date for young children, expected all year. Even the poorest families brought the Three Kings something, even a simple ball. A shout of joy ran through the neighborhood and everyone was happy.

Months later while we were walking with a neighbor very close to my mother who had an older niece. I told her about the Magi and she mocked me:
  - You do not know that the wise men are your own parents ...
I was paralyzed. Something inside me broke down. Childhood innocence disappeared before this news.It was time to let the imagination fly and see the harsh reality. I guess the same thing happened to everyone in my generation. But the illusion and happiness that gave me those days of the toys brought by the wise men was necessary in our childhood and the passage towards another stage of our life.

That's why I was so grateful to my parents when I was young. That gesture of love that stimulated the magical imagination of children.

Well, following the subject with my two children. We were in the Special Period where hunger and the shortage of articles predominated in every single village home. They opened the Shopping Center where there were many toys but only to raise dollars that few families received from abroad.

I told myself that the Castro could not eliminate the three wise men from my house, to avenge atheist communism even if it was symbolic. We had a few dollars and my wife and I invested in a few toys bought at the mall, depriving us of more important things.

But I remembered the illusion and joy of my childhood. My children will not stay this time with empty hands. The night before the day I placed the toys on the sofa in the living room and my wife and I went to sleep.

When we got up, I urged the children to go to the living room. I had an automatic camera ready. The children, upon discovering the toys, rushed upon them. I shot them a picture. My wife in the last visit she made to Uruguay without telling me anything took the photo in which our children with bright eyes of happiness and joy looked at the camera with the toys in their hands.

I wanted to give them the same illusion that my parents gave me with the story of the Magi. I do not know at what age they knew the truth but I felt satisfied to give him a happy day in the midst of so many restrictions.

The last  New Year I spoke with my children and I swear that they remembered that day, although I am already a grandfather, I felt victorious in a battle against Castro's communism and give hope to my children and all the children who still have the magic thought to believe in something superior to ourselves.

SHE DANCED LIKE 200 YEARSCuba: the 200 years old of Alicia Alonso

SHE DANCED LIKE 200 YEARS

THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CUBAN BALLERINA ALICIA
ALONSO.

Admittedly, this Lady of ballet is "very first"

When she was young and was in the Ballet Theater of New York the legend says she did not make any noise with her shoes when sliding down the track.

It was the stage in which she was levitated possessed by the devil, with whom she had a secret pact: to be faithful to the cuban  Revolution and to the evil one who was nothing less than Fidel Castro.
In Havana, the performances at the former García Lorca theater - now called by her name - had been sold out weeks before by gays and old wives of ambassadors full of pearl necklaces and earrings of precious stones, wrapped in mink skins although the temperature outside was of 32 degrees.

Before her dance, when Alicia made a dizzying "fouttet" or an "arabasque" the gays exploded in applause and had no more expression to define the art of the lady than shouting "Puta"-hucker- "Witch"

Now, when she has about 200 years old, she did not have flour to make cakes  or sweets. There was only flour left for Raul Castro, his daughter the princess and a handful for Diaz-Canel.

But Alicia Alonso was not without her sweets. She was very intelligent, she asked her aunt in exile that  was already a mummy of about 250 years to send her a sack of flour.

Thus, leading pastry could make the cake but not before stealing a quantity of flour to cheer up their families who already hated the so-called loaves that the government gave to the people and that seemed like a new kind of flour imported from an African tribe that they used to fatten pigs.

Congratulations Alicia. First ballerina and glory of the world ballet for your 98 years old.

    .Happy New Year.
