Biden, under court order, to restart Trump's 'Remain in Mexico' program
President Joe Biden’s administration has come to an agreement with the Mexican government to restart the ‘Remain in Mexico’ program, previously instituted by former president Donald Trump, The Washington Post reports. The program requires asylum seekers to remain outside of the US while their claims are being processed.
More about the program:
- It is set to begin next week in San Diego and the Texas cities of Laredo, Brownsville and El Paso, The Guardian reports
- Despite criticism from Biden and administration officials, the program will restart due to a Supreme Court ruling in August
- Mexico has its own demands for the humanitarian rights of the asylum seekers, including that claims will be processed within 180 days
